How early to submit the MDAC
Last updated: June 2026
Timing matters with the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card. Learn the pre-arrival window, why submitting too early can backfire, and how to handle changes.
One of the most common questions travelers ask about the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) is simply: when should I do it? Submit too late and you risk arriving unregistered; submit too early and your submission may fall outside the accepted window. Getting the timing right is straightforward once you understand how the MDAC works.
The pre-arrival window
The MDAC is designed to be submitted shortly before you travel — within three days (72 hours) of your arrival in Malaysia. This window exists so the information you provide is current and reflects your actual trip. It is not a form you complete months in advance when you book; it is a final pre-departure step.
Why submitting too early can backfire
Because the MDAC is tied to a specific, near-term arrival, filing well outside the window can mean your submission is not accepted, or that you simply have to do it again closer to the date. There is little benefit to rushing it weeks ahead. The better approach is to prepare your information early — gather your passport, travel, and accommodation details, which we list in our MDAC requirements 2026 guide — and then complete the actual submission once you are inside the window.
Build it into your trip checklist
A reliable habit is to treat the MDAC like online check-in: something you handle in the final couple of days before you fly, once your plans are locked. Set a reminder for roughly three days before departure so it does not slip your mind in the rush of packing.
What if your plans change?
Travel plans move. If your dates, flight, or accommodation change after you submit, your MDAC should reflect reality, so you may need to update your details or resubmit. This is another reason not to file too far ahead — the closer you are to travel, the less likely your details are to change.
Don't confuse timing with a visa
The MDAC's short window is about arrival registration, not authorization to enter. If your nationality requires a visa, that is a separate process with its own, often much earlier, timeline — see our guide on MDAC vs visa. Plan any visa well in advance, and save the MDAC for the final stretch.
In short
Prepare early, submit within three days of arrival, and keep your confirmation accessible for the border. If you would prefer the submission reviewed and handled for you within the window, our assisted service can do that — or you can file it yourself, for free, on the official government portal.
